Exwick History Society

about us...

Community Interest Statement

Our activities will provide benefits to people who live or work in or near to Exwick (Exeter, Devon) who wish to learn about, and carry-out, small-scale projects and activities in the field of local history but who lack the resources or support needed to share, develop, or bring, their cultural education and archive ideas to fruition.

Description of Activities

Operation of a local history organisation to give affordable access to related programmes and projects (e.g. community education, archives, information & exchange services, and events).

This is explained further below:

The community who live or work in or near to Exwick (Exeter, Devon) comprise a substantial population, amongst whom are people who would benefit from opportunities to work together to advance cultural education and local archives in the field of local history.

The CIC will focus on improving community well-being and bringing the community together through its activities, events, research, publications, and local improvements or facilities in its selected field.

The company differs from a commercial company because it is not being established for individual personal gain.

Origins of the Society

Our society began in 2008 at the suggestion of a local meeting of the Councils ‘Living Here’ project.

The founder members included the late Julia Sharp, who co-ordinated the group.

Our first local exhibition was held in February 2009.

By 2010, we had written and published our first local history guide:  “A Local History Trail Around Exwick”. Several others followed, and were made available locally.

Gradually, the founders of the society moved away, moved onto new challenges, or sadly passed away as did Julia.

Taking the Society Forward

Commencing early in 2022, the society's local history archive has begun to be sorted through by volunteers, who have generally met each Friday morning at the Exwick Parish Hall.

During 2022/23 we are seeking to re-establish the local history group on an active footing.

We welcome ideas for events, archives work, projects and fund-raising.

If you are interested in the revival of the group, please contact us at:

All are welcome, please join us.
